Purcell funeral music: More information about this edition

This new edition, which was published in 2011, is based on the principles of modern „Urtext“ Editions.

Purcell composed this music for the funeral of Queen Mary, who died 1694 in the age of only 32 years. He had only about 3 months to finis the work, meanwhile  her embalmed body lay in state in Banqueting House, Whitehall.

Purcell’s music is very moving, and it shows some eally unique elements besides a traditional composition technique, which is of course typical for the composer. Sadly enough, in the same year 1695 this music had to be played a second time – at Purcell’s own funeral. Only 35 years old, he died from tuberculosis.
